Fiona has been working in museums for 12 years in several capacities including volunteer, curator, advisor and now Director.
Prior to working for the Guild Fiona was a Museum Development Officer (MDO) for ten independent museums in Scarborough and Ryedale in North Yorkshire. Her work involved advising museums in policy and practice, building capacity, creating partnerships, managing projects, providing training and professional support and acting as an advocate for the museum sector.
Before being an MDO, she was Curator of the Bayle Museum, a small independent museum based in a 12th Century Monastic Gatehouse in the Old Town of Bridlington, East Yorkshire. During her time at Bridlington, Fiona led the museum through a major refurbishment and achieved 'Museums Registration', the national recognised standard for museums.
Whilst studying for her 'A' levels and BA Hons in History and Archaeology, she volunteered at her home town museum in Swaffham, Norfolk. She also spent an enjoyable two months working and living on site in the Colliery Village at Beamish Open Air Museum, County Durham, as part of her MA in Museum Studies.
Fiona lives with her husband in the Yorkshire Wolds and in her spare time enjoys cooking, walking and visiting historic properties.
She says, "I am looking forward to the exciting challenge of setting up the new Quilt Museum and Gallery in York for summer 08. Hope to see you all there!" |
