*New Exhibition Opens Soon!*
‘Quilts in Common’, a guest exhibition from the International Quilt Study Centre (IQSC) in Lincoln, Nebraska, will run in York’s new Quilt Museum and Gallery from 10 October until 11 January 2009
(Please note: The Quilt Museum and Gallery will be closed on Wednesday 8th and Thursday 9th of October during the installation of the new exhibition before it opens to the public on Friday 10th October. We apologise for any inconvenience caused).
The exhibition, which will feature quilts from many different countries, is designed to show the shared approach to ideas and symbolic expressions, arranged in groupings. A group called Narrative Albums, for example, will have historic quilts as well as modern examples including a German quilt on the theme of human rights and a quilt from Zimbabwe that tells the story of village life. Ancient Symbolism, another grouping, will have an Indian Palampore and an American example of complex applique.
The new exhibition represents a considerable coup for the Quilt Museum and Gallery, which is operated by the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles. It is the first time that IQSC has sent an exhibition outside the United States. The IQSC collection was established in 1997 at the University of Nebraska with a donation of 960 quilts from collectors Robert and Ardis James. The collection has historic and contemporary art quilts from 23 different countries, including the work of British quilt artist Pauline Burbidge. A new museum, built to house the collection, was dedicated in March 2008.
‘Quilts in Common’ will continue a theme introduced in the opening exhibition of IQSC’s new museum. ‘People have really enjoyed learning about the connections that exist between quilts regardless of when or where they were made,’ said IQSC curator Marin Hanson. The exhibition has also helped visitors expand their concept of what a quilt can be.’ Marin put together the exhibition with colleague Carolyn Ducey and she will accompany the exhibition to York to help with the hanging.
