A multi-coloured, hand-pieced cotton coverlet, containing seven frames of early printed cottons around a central block printed panel with a floral design. The third border has patchwork star blocks separated by rectangles of printed cotton. No information is known about the coverlet's maker. It was purchased in the 1940s at a flea market in either St. Andrews or Coupar in Fife. The buyer was afraid that, in a time of fabric shortages, the coverlet would be cut up and recycled and so she was keen for the piece not to fall into unappreciative hands. The owner and her husband lived in a former fisherman's cottage in St. Andrews, and a friend of the owner eventually donated the coverlet to The Guild in 1991.
