Maker:
Emms, Amy
Date:
1993

This spectacular Amy Emms piece was made in 1993 from pink acetate satin with polyester wadding, and was specially commissioned by the Quilters’ Guild of the British Isles for their collection.

Amy recalls, in ‘Amy Emms’ Story of Durham Quilting’ that ever since she saw her mother quilt as a girl, she “found the craft fascinating”. Here she has used a very shiny fabric, and remembers the transition of using cottons, to sateens in the 1920s, then satins, silks and finally man-made nylons. The latter fabrics were preferred as they were softer, easier to work with and accentuated the quilting designs much more effectively.
