Stuffed silk quilt with all over floral repeat design made for a large four poster bed. The cut out sections for the bed posts are circular to fit a specific bed and around all edges apart from the top is an applied green and metallic thread braid. Along the bottom/side edges are buttons and corresponding loops made from plaited silk cord that match and fasten to create a fitted box shape around the bottom of the bed. The braid is anchored in place on the reverse side with an elaborate leaf-like design. There is no exact provenance with the piece, but it is thought to have been made for Hatfield house, the Hertfordshire estate of the Cecil family, which was built from 1607-1611.
